New developments in the study of coalition governments
This book clarifies a number of concepts too often taken for granted in the existing literature, performs theoretically-driven and methodologically novel comparative studies of the effects of institutions on coalition formation, revisits old empirical puzzles, provides seminal analyses of how party leaders combine coalition governance solutions to anticipate risks pertaining to multiparty governing, and confronts coalition theories to new empirical terrains.

134 dagar
Efter valet 2018 dröjde det 134 dagar innan Sverige fick en ny regering. Den bestod av samma partier och hade samma statsminister som den förra. Varför blev det så? Och varför tog det så lång tid? Var det regelverkets fel?

The Madisonian Turn – Political Parties and Parliamentary Democracy in Nordic Europe
The authors find that the Nordic states have moved away from their previous resemblance to a Westminster model toward a form of parliamentary democracy with more separation-of-powers features—a Madisonian model. These features are evident both in vertical power relations (e.g., relations with the European Union) and horizontal ones (e.g., increasingly independent courts and central banks). Yet these developments are far from uniform and demonstrate that there may be different responses to the political challenges faced by contemporary Western democracies.

Delegation and Accountability in Parliamentary Democracies
This is the most ambitious and comprehensive account of the institutions of democratic delegation in West European parliamentary democracies to date. It provides an unprecedented cross-national investigation of West European political institutions from 1945 until the present day, as well as situating modern parliamentary democracy in the context of changing political parties and the growing importance of the European Union. This empirical investigation includes all 17 West European parliamentary democracies. These countries are compared in a series of cross-national tables and figures, and 17 country chapters provide a wealth of information on four discrete stages in the delegation process: delegation from voters to parliamentary representatives, delegation from parliament to the prime minister and cabinet, delegation within the cabinet, and delegation from cabinet ministers to civil servants.

Coalition Governments in Western Europe
The project’s first publication about coalition bargaining (Müller and Strøm, 2000, 2003), provides an up-to-date account of central issues in coalition politics in the tradition of volumes edited by Browne and Dreijmanis (1982), Bogdanor (1983) and Pridham (1986). However, the scope of the research presented in Coalition Governments in Western Europe also goes beyond these previous works. Our efforts have been heavily influenced by new theoretical concerns, especially the interaction between the different stages in coalitional bargaining. On a country-by-county basis, this volume systematically links government formation to the other aspects of coalition governance.
